Changing Lives.

At Sakeenah Group, we believe in helping those less fortunate. That is why we sponsor our charity of choice, First Home Association...

First Home Association (FHA) is a charitable institution registered with the National Empowerment Foundation. It bears registration Number N/1468. Its objective is to set up social housing for the poor. FHA has already constructed and handed over social houses in Bois Marchand and Riche Terre regions to families living below poverty line.

With a population of approximately 1.3m, almost 9% of the population in Mauritius is living in abject poverty. Despite the fact that there are presently several NGOs walking hand in hand to fight poverty, it is sad to note that the situation has not improved.

The most recent Household Budget Survey 2012 conducted by the Central Statistics Office showed that the proportion of poor households below the relative poverty line (set at the half median household income) was 9.4% in 2012 up from 7.9% in 2006/2007.

The figures speak for themselves - the number of poor households increased from 26,400 in 2006/2007 to 33,800 in 2012.

Today, a large number of families across the island still do not have a roof over their head and are also unable to provide education to their growing children. We all know that a decent home improves the quality of life and a proper place to stay contributes to improving health and education.

FHA aims at eradicating poverty by helping those who are in dire need of a shelter and social assistance. The objectives of the Association are as follows:

  1. Build as many houses as possible for identified cases of families below the poverty line
  2. Encourage the construction of small but decent housing, especially those who are in need of shelter, targeting the most afflicted regions across the island.
  3. Improve their standard of living, guide and educate these families on how to face challenges of life and come out of the poverty trap.
